Additional Comments

Common Cause members and the public are interested to know where you stand on additional democracy ideas that some candidates have proposed, like reforming the Supreme Court, lowering the voting age, or expanding voting rights to non-citizens. What do you think about these reforms? And are there any other ways you want to make our democracy more representative, reflective, accessible, or accountable?

Response

I would not add seats to the Supreme Court. I don't want to let these extraordinary times that President Trump has created lead us to too many extraordinary remedies, or for ideas like these to be alibis for failures to win and hold governing majorities. I'll help build a party infrastructure that will win and keep the Senate by adding states that share our values. I'd rather see us go back to a country of following the law, having qualified justices, and depending on the systems of government that we already have in place while making those systems more be accountable and work better.

I support lowering the voting age for federal elections. I voted on an amendment to H.R. 1 to allow those 16 and older to vote in federal elections.

I support providing a path to citizenship so that more of our friends and neighbors can join us in exercising their votes.

Particularly in light of the Supreme Court's recent and appalling decision, we must do more to encourage states to create independent redistricting commissions in order to do away with the dirty, gerrymandered maps that are skewing our democracy.

Tell Eric Swalwell thank you.
