Voter suppression tactics are currently being pushed at a state level by powerful people in the Republican Party and this is a huge national outrage. While tactics were more sweeping during the Jim Crow era -- e.g. literacy tests, poll taxes, grandfather clauses that were meant to keep people of color and immigrants from voting -- the conservatives in state governments across the country are pushing for new tactics like requiring an ID to cast a ballot or making it harder for people to register to vote, or cutting back on the time people have to vote. We must -- for the good of our “one nation, under God, indivisible” -- support the Voting Rights Act and condemn those who seek voter suppression in order to enhance their chances to win elections. I fully support and will advocate for restoring Section IV of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. I am opposed to voter ID laws and will fight against all forms of disenfranchisement, especially those which disproportionately affect people of color and marginalized people. I will advocate for policies that help to ensure that all Americans can exercise their right to vote, such as the expansion of same-day and online voter registration.
