Response

I am a former Medicaid mom and healthcare finance expert running a 100% PAC-free campaign for US House of Representatives in District 25. As a teen runaway, I was homeless and became pregnant, but through federal programs like Medicaid and with the support of family and community, went on to college, law school and a career in healthcare finance, where I became an expert on our broken healthcare system. Currently, I serve my community on the board at Central Health, which works to guarantee healthcare access for underserved communities in Texas. I know the law and have deep financial & accounting experience. Whether it’s digging into the 10Ks of the world’s largest corporations to hold them accountable, or going deep into Central Health’s financials to uncover that employees weren’t earning a minimum wage of at least $15/hour (which I organized to enact across the entire ecosystem) crunching the numbers is how we can unwind the inequities and challenges we face in this country. I am a proven fighter, unafraid to stand up to the status quo. I know how to organize, build winning coalitions, and win meaningful victories for this community.

With a burning planet, more and more of us unable to get by, and millions of us unable to see a doctor, the challenges we face are significant. The best way I know I can serve is in fixing the inequities and injustice and waste in American healthcare. My son has pre-existing conditions so in 2017, when the GOP came after healthcare for the sick, the elderly, and people with disabilities that’s what lit the fire - I knew I had to run.

My mom was a public school teacher and cleaned houses to make extra money. I was born poor, grew up working class, was pregnant at 17, briefly homeless, and relied on Medicaid for prenatal care before putting myself through college and law school. I was able to rely on Pell grants, the earned income tax credit, and the support of my community. I know the struggles that Texas families face to maintain decent housing, healthcare, and steady work because I have lived that experience. And this district deserves someone fighting for them in Congress who knows what the reality looks like for people here in Texas.

Tell Julie Oliver thank you.
